8The Terracotta Army

Nearly four decades ago, a group of peasants found remains of a life-size clay soldier in the Shanxi Province of Northwest China while digging for a well. On notifying the authorities, a team of architects arrived onsite and unearthed thousands of battle-ready clay soldiers along with their clay horses and wooden chariots. Called the Terracotta army, the soldiers are built to reproduce the imperial army of the first emperor of China, Qin Shi Huangdi, with the duty to protect the emperor’s tomb and accompany him to the afterlife. Till now architects have been able to locate 600 pits containing legions of soldiers over a 22 square mile area, with many underground vaults still unexplored. Three of the pits were made into a museum in 1979 containing 3000 clay soldiers poised for battle, 520 horses and 100 wooden chariots. The museum in China is the most popular tourist place.
