Jammu And Kashmir’s Contentious Special Status, Article 370 Scrapped

Jammu and Kashmir will now be governed by laws as applicable to other Indian citizens

Article 370 Scrapped. India today scrapped the Article 370 of the Constitution of India, which granted special status to the restive state of Jammu & Kashmir.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah said in the Rajya Sabha today that the government has decided to repeal Article 370 of the Indian Constitution.

He further added that now the state of Jammu and Kashmir will be bifurcated into two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature, and Ladakh, which will be without a legislature.

Indian President Mr Ram Nath Kovind exercised his powers under Clause 1, Article 370.

This presidential order automatically makes redundant the sections under Article 35A, which provided special privileges to “permanent residents” of the state while defining the term “permanent residents”.
