Released in the year 2017, the Bollywood movie Lipstick under my burkha faced a lot of criticism. It was directed by Alankrita Shrivastava and the movie censored at first covered versatile issues ranging from womens sexual desire to their craving for freedom. Four women of different ages of maturity are portrayed; Rehana Abidi, Leela, Shireen Aslam and Usha Buaji are shamed by the stereotypical society and yet they keep up courage, crosses obstacles and obtains freedom. Leela, the beautician desires to tour the world with her secret boyfriend however she is forced to marry a well to do man. Shireen is a married woman who is the mother of three children and a sales woman. Her dominating husband dislikes her using contraceptives and pills and only craves her to fulfil his sexual urges. Usha Buaji is a 55 years old woman who has forgotten her own identity been referred by all as buaji. She is the narrator of the story Lipstick Dreams. These 4 women picks up sheds of their broken identity and they are no longer submissive but rather fights back thus breaking the traditions of the patriarchal society.
7. English Vinglish
Shashi is a homemaker who caters to the demands of her children and her husband. Sridevi who plays the role of Shashi is often rebuked by her husband and children who criticizes her for not been able to converse in English. Directed by Gauri Shind, the movie helps the audience re discover housewives from a different perspective. As Shashi enrols herself in a English speaking class, she starts to she herself as a new person. She builts her identity and mocks the society who has the conception that women can’t learn something after a certain age. There is no particular time to start something new. As she gains respect from her husband and children, the film is a huge blow to the orthodox society. Released in the year 2012, the movie received a standing ovation at the Toronto International Film Festival 2012.
8. Hidden Figures
A must watch Hollywood movie of all times. This movie is all about three Afro American women who plays an important role in launching into the orbit of the astronaut John Glen’s. They are mathematicians and faces a lot of gender and racial discrimination. The most distressing fact was that they were not allowed to use the washroom meant for the white women. Thus film was inspired by the true story of the three women who worked for NASA as part of west computers. Released in the year 2017, the movie was directed by Theodore Melfi who was inspired by the respect these women achieved in the field of education. It achieved positive response from the audience who applauded to the performance of Dorothy Vaughan, Katherine Johnson and Mary Jackson. Available over Disney Hotstar the movie has an IMDb rating of 7.8/10. This historical account was a major success and these three women stayed as the primitive force behind the huge achievement.
9. Moana
An animated movie, it was released in the year 2016 and is an illustrious account of the adventure of a young girl called Moana. Defying most male heroes dominated adventures Disney has evolved a long way by providing us brave women characters. Released as a 3D movie, Moana is the daughter of the head of a Polynesian village. She is the chosen one who is supposed to return a mystical relic to Te Fiti in order to restore the condition of her people. The film was nominated for the best animated feature along with the best original song at the 89th Academy Awards. Unlike the other Disney princesses, Moana is a brave heart and she is glorified for her deeds, quite contrary to other charming princess waiting for princes to win their hearts. Available over Disney Hotstar the movie has an IMDb rating of 7.6/10 and is appropriate for all age groups.
