AirlineRatings.com’s Evaluation Criteria
AirlineRatings.com evaluates airlines based on passenger services and offerings across their fleet and network. The top 20 low-cost airlines of 2025 earned high rankings due to low base fares, extensive route networks, and affordable onboard services like meals, drinks, and snacks. These airlines also met strict safety standards, including a seven-star safety rating.
AirAsia’s Journey and Achievements
AirAsia began in 2001 with just two aircraft on domestic routes in Malaysia. Since then, it has revolutionized low-cost travel, flying over 800 million guests and connecting more than 130 destinations across its five operating markets: Malaysia, Thailand, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Cambodia.
Bo Lingam, Group CEO of AirAsia Aviation Group, credited this achievement to the dedication of AirAsia’s Allstars, its commitment to innovation and excellence, and continuous guest support.
“AirAsia has consistently ranked among the world’s best low-cost airlines since 2018. This recognition, along with our recent 7/7 safety rating, strengthens our drive to keep improving and delivering the best experience for our guests. We appreciate AirlineRatings for recognizing airlines that go beyond expectations.
“As a Group, we have made significant strides by staying agile and continuously enhancing services. We have tackled challenges like soaring demand and industry supply constraints while improving mobile check-in, real-time updates, AI-powered personalization, and service recovery options. Our goal is to offer a reliable yet value-driven travel experience.”
Future Plans: Fleet Expansion and Digital Innovation
AirAsia aims to expand its fleet, increase connectivity to key and emerging destinations, enhance digital services, and consolidate operations to meet growing travel demand. With affordability, innovation, and sustainability at its core, the airline remains committed to strengthening trust with guests, employees, and partners while building a global low-cost network.
Industry Recognition and Passenger Experience
Sharon Petersen, CEO of Airline Ratings Pty Ltd, commented: “While our World’s Safest Airlines focus on safety, the World’s Best Airlines awards are centred on passenger comfort, feedback, and product consistency across an airline’s route network.
“AirAsia stands out for its extensive flight network, connecting Southeast Asia to the world at affordable fares. Additionally, its hot meals rank among the best-tasting for low-cost carriers, especially when pre-purchased at the time of booking.”
Strong Passenger Growth and Fleet Expansion
In 2024, AirAsia Aviation Group carried over 63 million passengers with a strong 89% load factor, underscoring sustained demand. Fleet expansion played a key role, with the airline growing its active fleet to 205 aircraft out of 224, including the reactivation of 14 planes and the addition of ten aircraft, enhancing efficiency and supporting network growth.
